Going anywhere nice this year? If you need some holiday inspiration, here’s a few of our favourites.
Shorthaul - Costa del Sol
British holidaymakers started coming here in the 1950’s, and it’s easy to see why. Over 180 miles of beautiful beaches… the magical Mediterranean… an idyllic climate… and all just 2 hours and 40 minutes from the UK.
Things have changed a lot over the past 60 years. The hotels have grown taller, the golf courses have multiplied, and the bars have got swankier. But don’t worry – you can still find a fried breakfast for less than a fiver.
If you fancy a break from the beach, head into the hills behind Malaga and explore the ancient whitewashed villages. Or follow in the footsteps of earlier tourists at the ancient Roman theatre. If you’re planning an autumn break, check out the spectacular chestnut trees in the famous Copper Forest.
Longhaul - Florida
Florida is one of the top longhaul destinations for Brits, and most of us head straight to Orlando to get up-close-and-personal with Mickey and his mates at Walt Disney World. But there’s more to the Sunshine State than just theme parks.
If you don’t mind driving on the “wrong” side of the road, hire a car and head south west on Highway 1 which takes you across 42 miles of bridges linking the Florida Keys. Most of the traffic will be heading to Key West, but if you veer off the tourist trail, you’ll find all kinds of hidden gems.
Keep a sharp lookout for wild Key deer at Big Pine Key. And if you’ve packed your snorkel, check out the spectacular corals at Looe Key Reef.
UK - Blackpool
For fans of the traditional British seaside holiday, Blackpool ticks all the boxes. You can turn your knuckles white on the roller coasters at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, or climb the 563 steps to the top of Blackpool Tower. Or even “hook a duck” on one of the three historic piers.
If you’d rather just take a walk on the beach, Blackpool boasts seven miles of it. And they’ve recently won a Blue Flag Award - the international standard for water quality. So when the tide is in, you can have a paddle too.
For golfers, there are three cracking courses to choose from. And Royal Lytham & St Annes - venue of the 2012 Open Championship - is just 20 minutes away.
